SENSERLY, AMAKO

2018

A boy becomes a shark. Or perhaps he always was one?

Part memoir, part fiction and part visual narrative, this journal follows a young boy whose alter ego—a mackerel shark, that dangerous natural phenomenon—helps him navigate the uncertainties of childhood, particularly his encounters with adults, and most of all, with his mother.

     A mako shark. Ergo, Amako.

Unpredictable, humorous and emotionally intense, the narrative reflects the way children think and remember. Fragmented and associative, it unfolds through sketches, cartoons, letters, prayers, found material and flights of invention.

The book becomes the centre of a broader storytelling ecosystem.

How might a story evolve when it is no longer confined to a single form?

Amako develops a visual identity that extends into song, animation, cartoons and illustration, with each medium revealing a different facet of his world. Rather than adaptations, these forms become parallel modes of storytelling—layering, extending and reimagining the narrative while exploring what becomes possible when a story moves beyond the printed page.
